It’s not easy for Call . . . and it gets even harder after he checks out his basement and discovers that his dad might be trying to destroy both him and Havoc.

Call escapes to the Magisterium -- but things only intensify there. The Alkahest -- a copper gauntlet capable of separating certain magicians from their magic -- has been stolen. And in their search to discover the culprit, Call and his friends Aaron and Tamara awaken the attention of some very dangerous foes -- and get closer to an even more dangerous truth.

As the mysteries of the Magisterium deepen and widen, bestselling authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare take readers on an extraordinary journey through one boy’s conflict -- and a whole world’s fate.

Review

So this is the second book of the Magisterium series.

If you haven’t started reading this series, you really should, especially if you are a Harry Potter or Percy Jackson fan.

Cassandra Clare and Holly Black are very popular writers and it’s no surprise that together they’ve created something different and great.

It can have similarities with Harry Potter but it is very unique in its way.

We’ve ended the first book: the iron trail with a shocking revealing about Callum Hunt and the young boy spent the summer thinking what it will this discovery mean for him and the relationship with his father and friends. Having a wolf as the sole companion didn’t really help.

Then when he discovers his father’s darkest plans, Callum runs away from home and goes to his friend’s house, Tamara, and luckily there’s also his other best friend, Aaron who has problem of his own by being the Makar. In this case the main character is not the savior (like in Harry Potter, Harry was the chosen one) but his best friend is the person that everyone wants to be friends with and exploit his fame.
It may seem that the trio Callum/Tamara/Aaron is similar to Harry/Hermione/Ron but they have different personalities and different stories.

I think the main critic I have is that the story was too short. There was a lot of action and it was fast paced so it seemed that everything happened too soon. We didn’t have a full school year like in the first book. I don’t know if it was a choice the authors made or if it was for lack of ideas on how to fill the gaps, but it all ended before winter holidays!
There’s great potential for this series. The world they have built is worth exploring. I think they should focus more on the details, maybe develop more the characters.

This is the main reason I’m not giving five stars. I think they should mix this action-packed story with more exploration of this magical world.
