Plot: In GATHERING DARKNESS, book three of the New York Times bestselling Falling Kingdoms series, the stakes have never been higher as three teams push forward on a race to find the Kindred, the four elemental crystals possessing ancient all-powerful magic, first:

Prince Magnus has just witnessed torture, death, and miracles during the bloody confrontation that decimated the rebel forces. Now he must choose between family and justice as his father, the cruel King Gaius, sets out to conquer all of Mytica. All Gaius needs now are the Kindred - the four elemental crystals that give godlike powers to their owner. But the King of Blood is not the only one hunting for this ancient, storied magic...

• THE KRAESHIANS join the hunt. Ashur and Amara, the royal siblings from the wealthy kingdom across the Silver Sea, charm and manipulate their way to the Kindred, proving to be more ruthless than perhaps even the King of Blood himself.

• THE REBELS forge ahead. Princess Cleo and vengeful Jonas lead them, slaying with sweetness, skill, and a secret that can control Lucia's overpowering magic - all so they can use the Kindred to win back their fallen kingdoms.

• THE WATCHERS follow Melenia out of the Sanctuary. They ally in the flesh with King Gaius, who vows to use Lucia's powers to unveil the Kindred.

The only certainty in the dark times is that whoever finds the magic first will control the fate of Mytica... but fate can be fickle when magic is involved.

Review

I’m glad I’ve started reading this series so late because I don’t have to wait a full year for the next book. Wow, what an ending!!!!

And to think that at the beginning I wasn’t too thrilled about it. It’s not like it was slow but once I reached the 100 pages I thought “Wow, I’m already at page 100 but nothing really exciting has happened”. I was afraid it was going to be a filler book, like some episodes in TV show, but I was wrong.

It was like looking at a game of chess. You read the pages and the author was setting the pieces on the board and you could feel the moves, the tactics behind every character, the strategy.

Just like the first two books in the series, there are a few deaths, some more painful than others, there are some traitors, backstabbing people, twists and turns.

In conclusion… no one can trust anyone, not even the reader.

Also, you can’t not root for some characters even if they make mistakes (yes, I’m talking about you Magnus.) and I’m starting to like Cleo more and more. I think she had the best character development in a series. In this book, you’ll find out that she’s getting really good at lying and deceiving.
About Lucia, I don’t know if I should feel sorry for her, angry, hate her. She’s a mystery, I don’t really know what to think.

But, whoever you love in this series, you will always go through a roller coaster of emotions.

Before reading the forth book, I really want to read the first book of the spin-off series: A book of Spirits of Thieves.  I wonder if I’ll learn more about the kindred, the magic in Mytica and the elementals.
