Review

Read this for the dystopian reading challenge group month read-along. It has been on my radar for a long time, but I never took the chance to read it.

The book is divided into three parts.

In part 1 there's the introduction of this dystopian world. Set hundred of years in the future. When a kid turns 16 they have to go through an operation to make them "pretty" and live in Prettyville....
Okay, written like that it doesn't seem like a nice premises. But the world is well described and interesting. Uglies are practically normal people. To eliminate racism and violence caused by the fact that we are different from each other, everyone must go through a plastic surgery so everyone basically look alike. In this part I didn't really like the main character Tally, but her friend Shay was cool, a rebel and it gave us a different prospective.

I'm not really comfortable with the subject. Distinguishing the people from Uglies and Pretties and the use of plastic surgery as a rite of passage into adulthood, but it's an interesting dystopian world.

In part 2 things shift. I'm not going to spoil you, but I'll tell you that there's more to the story. Not everything is perfect in Prettyville and not everyone wants to go through surgery. That's when we meet another group of people in Smoke town and Tally becomes more interesting as she grows as a person.

In part 3 there's a lot of action. You will like it if love to read about adventures and heist. It ends with a cliffhanger, of course... ready for book 2.

At the end it wasn't bad. Unfortunately the author ruined the character of Shay who I really liked at the beginning of the book. Even if I felt uncomfortable with the theme, it is well written and I enjoyed the reading.
